Unnao Rape Case: Survivor’s Family and Activists Protest Outside Delhi High Court

Background of the Case :-

The Unnao rape case has remained one of the most talked‑about crimes in India’s recent history. Former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted in 2017 and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the Delhi High Court’s recent decision to suspend his sentence has reignited anger and disappointment among the survivor’s family and rights activists.

The Protest at Delhi High Court :-

Protest Outside DELHI High Court

Soon after the bail order, the survivor’s family, joined by women’s rights groups, gathered outside the Delhi High Court to voice their opposition. The survivor’s mother expressed her anguish, stating that while earlier judges had delivered justice, the suspension of Sengar’s sentence felt like a betrayal. She vowed to continue the fight and approach the Supreme Court if necessary.

Voices of Activists

Members of organizations such as the All India Democratic Women’s Association joined the protest, chanting slogans like “Stop protecting rapists”. Activists argued that granting bail to Sengar undermines the credibility of the justice system and sends a dangerous signal to survivors of sexual violence across the country.

Police Intervention :-

The protest was quickly met with police action. Security personnel informed the group that demonstrations were not permitted at the High Court gates and directed them to Jantar Mantar, Delhi’s designated protest site. Reports suggested brief scuffles and even instances of manhandling as the police tried to disperse the protesters.

Nationwide Reaction :-

The decision has sparked nationwide outrage, with activists, survivor advocates, and citizens questioning the credibility of the judicial process. The CBI has already announced its plan to challenge the bail order in the Supreme Court, raising hopes that corrective action may follow. For many, the Unnao case has become symbolic of India’s larger struggle against sexual violence and the resilience of survivors seeking justice.
